San Antonio College, also called SAC is located on San Pedro Avenue, just North of Downtown. It is a community college that is part of Alamo Colleges District. The Alamo Colleges District is a network of five community colleges in San Antonio.

The district was started as San Antonio College District in 1978. It was later renamed to Alamo Colleges District in 1982. The other colleges in this district besides San Antonio College are; St. Phillips College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College and Northwest Vista College.

San Antonio College was founded back in 1925 as a university junior college under the administration of the University of Texas. It had an enrollment of only 200 at that time. It was later passed on to be under the San Antonio Board of Education.

In 1948, the name ‘San Antonio College’ was adopted officially. SAC moved to its current location in 1951.

Many associations have approved and accredited the San Antonio College. They include: the Association of Texas Colleges & Universities, the Board of Nurse Examiners for the state of Texas, the Texas Educational Theater Association, and the Association of Music schools, among many others.

Academics

San Antonio College offers different academic programs in different levels of study. The four types of credentials offered here include; degree, certificate, pre majors/ transfers and continuing education. The college has lived up to the mission of Alamo Colleges District by offering by offering high quality general education to the people of San Antonio.

Each year the campus awards more than 5000 degrees and certificates. Some of the courses offered at SAC to mention just a few include; Nursing, Music business, Dental assisting, computer programming, Computer science, Accounting Technology, Biology, Pre- nursing, pre pharmacy, criminal justice / law enforcement, education, environmental science and so many others.

In 2007 San Antonio College was awarded an exemplary rating for seven of its academic programs. Later in 2008 the rating was revised to include more academic programs bringing the total to 11 programs.

The courses in the award are; business management, dental assisting, Radio -TV and film, nursing education, computer aided design, mortuary science, American Sign Language, Public Administration, Real Estate, and Finance and Financial management.

Awards

The college strives for exemplary performance in everything which is why they have received so many awards over the years. Just recently the college was awarded #8 Community College for Hispanic Student.

Other awards include; Top 150 for Community Excellence, National Blue Ribbon School, Best Online Schools in Texas, Best Online Associate Degree program, Top 10 in Technology and so many others. All these awards are a sign of how well the college is performing in San Antonio.

To ensure that the college not only performs well but also sustains the exemplary performance, the college undertakes Strategic Planning. During this process the mission and the goals are reviewed for improvement.

Also, the results that have been attained before are evaluated to ensure there is always improvement. You can therefore always expect to see the college not only meet the expectations of the public but also surpass them.
